- Horne was the first black performer signed to a long-term deal by a major Hollywood studio.
- In 1943, she landed the part of Selina Rogers in the all-black movie musical Stormy Weather whose title track became her signature song.
- She broke the color-barrer by becoming the first black performer to sing in an all-white band and was the first to play the then-legendary Copacabana nightclub in New York.
- Her one woman show “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music” ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway.
