The examiner wrote: Wondrously talented, “too black” for superstardom, “too white” for black audiences — Lena Horne epitomized class, dignity and elan like no artist of her time.

5 interesting factoids about her:
- Horne began her singing career at age 16 at the Cotton Club.
- Horne was the first black performer signed to a long-term deal by a major Hollywood studio.
- In 1943, she landed the part of Selina Rogers in the all-black movie musical Stormy Weather whose title track became her signature song.
- She broke the color-barrer by becoming the first black performer to sing in an all-white band and was the first to play the then-legendary Copacabana nightclub in New York.
- Her one woman show “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music” ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway.
