Your Online Footprint

by JermynToh on 28 April, 2009

A recent article I read made me realise that as the internet grows with us and as we engage with it more and more, we leave a trail of information of ourselves all over the world wide web.

Depending on how unique your name and how many people follow the pictures, blog entries and videos you share, you will usually be able to find some search entries showing up with bits of content & information you’ve put out there.

I keep 3 blogs, share videos via YouTube, am pretty active in Facebook and have started Tweeting which means my life is pretty public. My staff, clients and partners are able to find me easily and can get a relatively thorough glimpse of my life and my movements.

In this time of decreasing personal privacy it does mean that we have to live our lives in a way that isn’t gonna come back to haunt us. This is an era of transparency, honesty and integrity.

It seems there’s no turning back from all of this unless you turn into a digital hermit and refuse to engage online.

In the near future, we’ll have to do some spring cleaning of our online footprint as this web is turning out to be a public file of our person.

Oh well … here’s to the internet and how easy its making it for us to check if our current date is a serial prankster or has peculiar fixations.

Re: agree!

move ur blog to Livejournal? there are security settings which u can use to only allow people on ur “Friends” list to see ur entries … or even “Private” so only u get to see your entries … and special “Groups” entries which allow only select people on ur customised group list to see ur entries

agree!

U know what I totally agree with this entry. I panicked yesterday when my dad added me on facebook. Reason is I have a link to my blog where I wrote eveything from sex to relationships with my boyfriends and my current hubby (u read it too) which, obviously it’s not time for him to read those yet!

He must have found me from some kinda links or even googled me coz he never asked for my email address. So now I have to temporarily block access to my blog till I figured out a way to get away with it.

Arggggh :-/

OMG, I have never seen you on stage or on reel.

Hey Mr Hollywood, will you sign my autograph? *smiley face*

Too bad there are 10,000 other James Lims in cyberspace. LOL.
