As I was YearBookingMyself, childhood memories came rushing back and I recalled a rather rough period of my childhood.
At 15, I was struggling to be gay and had just gotten beaten up by someone I liked. That triggered loads of self examination which resulted in a discontent with my nerdiness and a transformation. I guess I did it in part to make the guy see what he’s missing as well as with the slight delusional but unacknowledged hope he might come after me again.
From a bespectacled boy with side-parted hair longish hair who didn’t have much of a wardrobe, I started wearing contacts, sported spiky hair that was cut by a hair-dresser instead of a barber and started wearing tank-tops and jeans / berms ala Wham!
I should be glad for that incident coz it really sparked a transformation from nerd & geek to someone more conscious of fashion & trends.
So I’m thinking we all have a point in our lives where we transformed right … whether gradual or sudden?
