English Radio in Malaysia

Its a really sad state of affairs when you hear radio DJs talk about flushing shit from a toilet bowl and they get listeners to call in regarding that.

Then there’s another incident where another station planted a reporter in an episode of “Gotcha” to heckle the Pussy Cat Dolls in a radio interview till one of the girls was crying and their manager had to step in and tell him he was out of line. He was told by the Pussy Cat Dolls that they hope he wasn’t a representation of what Malaysians are like because of his deplorable behaviour. Despite that, the interview still got aired.

I can’t comprehend how any of this can be called entertainment.

I’ve given up switching channels every time I hear something unpleasant on radio coz that happens every talk break on every other English radio show.

Listening to robingoh on Jia 88.3FM via internet radio in the morning and Chinese stations when I’m driving now. At least I only understand 50% of what’s being said on Malaysian radio and that hasn’t gotten to the point where I’m upset and angry at what’s been discussed.

Sigh … what happened to honest to goodness entertainment with substance and heart?

hmm …isn’t most entertainment based on some element of imagination thus false… its the fictional, aspirational, hope-giving parts that move us right?

isn’t dim sum dollies part based on fiction part based on reality but also with a lot of heart? and so is Asian Boys Vol 1 & 2? and perculiar chris and torch song trilogy and the golden girls

i’m not that jaded to believe there’s no hope in the intrinsic goodness of a person.

i still believe we’re ultimately good at heart … its the conditioning of society and our environment that turns us into being fucked up and/or violent.

but we ultimately have a choice … to choose to be that way … or to rise above that

true, but those kind of entertainment are almost false. There were never “good ol’ days”. People were fucked up and violent from day 1.

  3. JermynToh says:

funny enough … watching movies like Mary Poppins, Fame the series, Chorus Line and other movies from the 70s & 80s to have a lot more heart.

these movies and some of the music from that time had a lot of heart … the time of black&white TV with lots of singing and dancing had so much hear

oh, btw, I listen to Red FM only because of the DJs, the music is quite horrendous. LOL

Yes, he is rather cheesy, but rather that than mindless frat jokes.

I gave up on Hitz and Fly because they’re just full of crap. The Gotcha and Lie Detector thing is seriously intrusive and outrageous. There were a few episodes where they actually broke couples up you know? My blood boils!!!

Listen to RedFM. The breakfast show is light, funny, and with some underlying ‘innuendos’, but is relatively clean. The DJ’s a friend.

At least there’s no “bro” or “apa lah” or what not…bloody goons.

Ok, at this moment I’m thinking about the coliseum and public executions and stuff, and I don’t think there ever was such a thing, maybe

hmmm …. i tried listening to Red today and it isn’t great … the music selection is all over the place … and Will Quah this morning was a bit cheesy.

but first day only … must give chance … will listen a few more days and then decide if its back to the chinese stations and CDs for me

  8. JermynToh says:

yeah … the Lie Decttector was actually the peaking of bad radio for me

  9. urbank1d says:

Mixed FM’s Lie Detector is just as deplorable. This nation has a penchant of making people feel stupid or pathetic on airwaves. I don’t know why they keep thinking this is the kind of stuff we wanna listen to.

Which is why, sometimes, I rather listen to the Mandarin stations, and yes they might be a little soapy but I rather hear someone talking about “how hard it is to live in Malaysia on XXX salary” than “omg, you’re thinking of cheating on me!!!’”.

I know the “Gotcha” sessions are really mean. I’ve given up on Hitz ages ago.

Fly is a bit better, but the “Fix it” sessions can be equally bad as well.

I miss the old red FM before it got bought over by TheStar

  11. JermynToh says:

hmmm … i’ll give that a try … haven’t listened to Red much

  12. JermynToh says:

its just nice for me to hear a familiar voice in the morning
