I posted this in response to vagrantz‘s comment …. thought I’d share with with everyone.
I’ve added and expanded (in non-italics) on my response coz my brain went on and on and on again ….
Vagrantz
And yes, I was reading about your facebook blog. Im turning 27 and you’d be surprise to know that Im one of the quilty ones who is STILL contemplating “the plunge” into super blogdom (super blogdom is my definition for sites that not only allows you to blog but rekindle old r/ships, share pictures and do a million other things that it becomes a cult movement). I may be the last few ones on this planet we call earth who still has not registered for a facebook/multiply/myspace/what-have-you profile. Im happy with just youtube and MSN at the moment. Of course, the occassional LJ entry is sufficient.
Now here is something to think about – With so many of this semi-blogs/full-service blogs available to us online, have we ever once stopped to wonder how this sites make money besides advertising space? (yeah see, my head is so full of crap like this – people blog, but I think $$)… and once the market gets too saturated (right now I think it’s only halfway to saturation point), whats there left on the internet to entertain us folks? they’ve done online games, youtube, blogs, chat lines, online personals, IMs and porn. Disco dancefloor on the internet perhaps? (for those who are too lazy to go out
)
My Response
you;’re not the only one la … i know lots of people who don’t haven’t gotten on to facebook yet
the general worry is that once i start …. i won’t be able to get a life!
the thing with facebook is that it can really take over your life if u don’t know how to balance it.
- i just added a poker application and this allows u to play poker with lots and lots of people from all over the world … its like walking into an online casino!!!
How can facebook eat up your life?
- one can actually spend all your time on facebook playing poker in real time …I’m sure there are other real-time applications and games that could keep you glued to your computer
- doing things to ALL your friends …. sending gifts … playing games … buying friends … bantering with your friends through the message boards or “Walls” as Facebook calls it
- searching for new things to do on Facebook
If you’re not careful … it can turn into an unhealthy addiction where you just hole up at home removed from reality and the real world. As with everything in this world …. balance is needed.
how do they make money?
- facebook is amazing …. its hard to explain if u’re not on facebook but they’ve stumbled onto a gold-mine here
- some “applications” need tokens or $$ or money for you to do things
- each game or application has its currency of sorts
- the more actions you do … the more money u get
- the more money you get … the more you can do with your friends / to your friends
- if you decide you want even MORE money … they asked you to click on ads …. or add an application … or take a survey … or sign up to be a member of something in another website
Its brilliant! Facebook has discovered how to make online users click ads and participate in online marketing initiatives. That’s where the money is!!!
I really don’t believe in interuptive advertising on the internet.
- I hate it when I get sent things I didn’t ask for …
- i hate it when banners expand and take-over my screen …
- I hate it when i want to download something and have to wait 15 secs for a link shows up … during this 15 secs … I’m made to stare at online ads that has no relevance to me at all
i very very seldom look at banners and the only one’s i’ve clicked were at porn sites which promised to show me something more or gave me free access or when a website asked me to help keep their services free by clicking on advertising banners.
In this internet space that’s crowded with advertisers who insist on interupting our surfing, Facebook has found a way to get people to want to click on an advertising link. Facebook rewards people for interacting … clicking a link … updating particulars … adding an application … all so we can do more things that WE WANT TO DO with our friends on Facebook!
What happens is we then decide which offers interest us … we take the time to really read and consider advertising messages. This being a conscious decision by ourselves to consider things … means a much higher return on investment for advertisers … if their online initiative has been thought through properly la!
So that’s why I love Facebook … the only thing now for me is to convince my clients to develop games and applications for Facebook which I’ve been trying to do. The success or failure of any game we propose then really reflects how well we’ve managed to engage potential customers in an entertaining way that they want to participate in.
Keeping my fingers cross that it won’t be too long before I blog here on LJ asking my friends to add an application we created!
So vagrantz … to answer your question … “whats there left on the internet to entertain us folks?”
I don’t know … i guess its really up to our imaginations isn’t it? For now Facebook seems to be the hot thing so let’s just enjoy it till the next amazing thing comes along.
