Whitney Houston @ Live & Loud KL 07

by JermynToh on 3 December, 2007

Whitney was the last act of Turn On The Pop on Saturday nite. Before her was an hour by Shaggy, a segment by Malaysia’s top artistes (who were quite bad overall), as well as Elliot Yamin. The concert actually started at 3pm and went on till 1.30am … we only arrived at 7pm so we missed most of the local and other Asian acts.

Shaggy is an amazing entertainer and even though his songs all sound more or less the same, he and his team really worked the audience into a frenzy. We were all jumping up and down waving our hands. Its also funny that as a male performer who’s a bit of a sex symbol, he sang quite a few songs about empowering women.

Elliot Yamin has a truly amazing voice. His was the clearest and most powerful of the concert and it was thrilling to listen to. His band was tight too and they really are talent musicians through and through.

Miss Houston asked that there be no photography or filming during her concert and there were plenty of security guards to “roughly” enforce that request. She made us wait a good 45 minutes as they reset the stage and did sound check before she came on.

Her appearance was quite startling. She appeared wearing a silver flowing trench coat and we all couldn’t stop screaming. She sang and we screamed some more. She even had a costume change to a beautiful purple flowing dress and her legs are still stunningly elegant and sexy.

I can’t quite put into words what it felt like to see a singer I grew up with on-stage & live …. right in front of me.

Her voice still has some of the qualities we all knew her for but everyone cud hear that she had trouble hitting the high notes. She moderated the ranges for a few of her songs and she usually sang down rather than up. On some of the songs, her back-up singers were doing most of the work.

But past that … when she does sings … you can hear a true artiste in the way she inteprets a song and how she uses her voice and her intepretation to tell you the song’s story. Her singing of Step By Step, I Will Always Love You, Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know and I’m Every Woman were renditions that you’d never hear on any CD.

I’d say I was lucky to see Whitney on stage 20 meters in front of me … and get to scream “WE LOVE YOU WHITNEY” and to hear her say “I love you too” back. And even though she wasn’t as spectacular as I remember her to be … she is still a wonder to watch and listen to.
