Usability Issues: HTC Touch & Windows Mobile

by JermynToh on 23 November, 2007

I’m so irritated with the system upgrade for the HTC Touch that i need to share this with everyone.

HTC Touch didn’t have the ability to key in text using a phonepad (like how its done normally on mobile phones) so typing or writing an SMS took me twice as long as usual when i was on my HTC Touch.

This is not considering the fact that u have to use the stylus and I’m not even gonna start about the number of times i’ve walked into peoeple or walls or nearly gotten run down by a car as i tried to multi-task and send an SMS.

HTC promised to include this phonepad input facility in the next system upgrade. Upgrade was released recently and i installed this yesterday hoping my life wud be easier and SMSing wud be faster

DID NOT HAPPEN AT ALL … in fact .. things are worse…. the usability of the phone took a dive

the phonepad takes up 80% of the screen and u’re left with a tiny space to input text / see what ur SMS message is … which means i’m squinting a lot more

the predictive text is too smart for its own good so I spend more time undoing things it does

trying to select who I want to send an SMS to is even worse now … previously i cud choose from a list of people after entering a few letters … now it gives me only 1 contact and when i add a space … that contact gets selected. i’m not going into how much time i need to retype the name or how i’ve had to change how i use my phone and go into my contacts list to find the person … then select “send him an SMS”

the most irritating thing .. the system upgrade uses more memory to run. previously i cud do several things at once .. even take pictures without ever being prompted to shut down applications. now .. i can only run 1 application at a time … if i try to launch another, after a few minutes i get a window asking me to shut down applications to continue working

HOW STUPID IS ALL THAT!!

i’m fighting with my phone and working around the limitations of the operating system and memomy to use it. shouldn’t these devices fit me … with usability that is logically thought out according to how most people would do things

some say i’m a blind supporter of Apple … well … Windows Mobile and HTC just proved to me again why i can continue to stick with Apple blindly

coz the usability of their products seldom fail to such a drastic degree

Do note though that overclocking will void your warranty + it does not solve the memory problem you have, just makes things run faster…

Poor thing, but yes I heard most people overclock their Touch a fair bit to get the boost in performance they need…

Well if you ever get the iPhone, it’s also somewhat of a PDA phone so don’t jinx yourself by saying such things first :P

was out on the weekend and its funny how all my fren did was tease me about my HTC Touch and 2 other guys who owned the phone immediately chipped in about their woes as well.

one guy said there was a time for about 30 mins he cudn’t access his phone book or make out-going calls coz the phone just kept “processing”

that made me recall a time when it took about 30 seconds for me to get into my phonebook and the ocassional times it takes about 10 – 15 seconds for my SMS application to launch

….. i really think the phone needs more memory for processing

i used to have an O2 … the SMSing facility was much better actually coz it had the phonepad feature… but even still … the O2 got regulated to my secondary phone

sigh … maybe i’m just not cut out to be a PDA user … this is 4 strikes after my Palm, Sony Clie & O2

Actually was asking you to try just installing the Phonepad and not the entire update, that’s what I helped HM do for his Tytn II and it works very well so far…

Sweets, just get a Sony Ericsson and all will be fine. Just make sure you attach it to a chain and have it soldered to your bone so you will never lose it again. Or, just leave it in your bag when you are in the gym, and thereby minimising your chance of misplacing or having it stolen. =)

I did think of getting the HTC Touch but thought better of it. I only use Microsoft products because I have to. Like my work notebook, other than that, I stay far away from it. Meaning, no Windows Mobile and all its bloatware.
