HTC Touch, Sony Ericsson & iPod Touch

I’ve been using the HTC Touch for a while … struggling with it to be more precise. I never really new how much until i started using the iPod Touch.

Then the difference between Apple and Windows hit home again …. they really are worlds apart in how they approach the concept of usability.

So I switched back to my Sony Ericsson on Monday and I started SMSing people like I normally do. I realised I’ve really been SMSing less coz it takes me twice as long to put together an SMS and the squinting isn’t really great for my eyes.

I lost my sony ericsson at the gym yesterday and its back to Windows Mobile 6.0. I upgraded to HTC’s new ROM for the Touch which included a new keyoard entry facility but SMSes are still slow to put together and contacts and calendar events are not as easy to enter / edit as they are on the iPod Touch

sigh … so i think i’m gonna sell my HTC Touch … soon …. to get back some money and go get myself a new Sony Ericsson.

The good thing that came out of all this is that I found out Maxis now does contracts for handphones and that I should upgrade my air-time package to the next highest one coz my usage is really high to enjoy 33% lower charges on my out-going calls.

hmmm … so maybe the moral of the story is the keep the calendar and PDA functions separate from the phone function

Actually my few friends that have the iPhone all complain about the unfriendliness of the SMS function – no multiple recipients, no MMS, keypad not user friendly… One of my friends gave up on the iPhone because he was a heavy SMSer so… Caveat emptor…

thanks … let me see if i can get the HTC Touch t be reset to factory settings … i don’t want the new upgrade features that tries to be too smart for its own good. the input mechanism is only one of the problems … its all the other things that they’ve changed that just doesn;t make sense

actually i was comparing the contacts and calendar features and how easy it is to use those vs how complex it is to use the Windows Mobile versions of contacts and calendar … and that made me think … if this is the iPod Touch .. wat can the iPhone possibly be like.

so far i haven’t any complaints about the iPhones SMS capabilities …. but my fren from the apple shop did ask me to wait at least another 6 to 9 months before seriously considering the iPhone so i’m gonna hold off for a while.

Maybe you can try installing Phonepad alone instead of the whole ROM upgrade. I can email you the Phonepad standalone CAB if you want, though am not sure how much space my version of Phonepad takes up on the Touch’s screen vs a normal screen…

But in all honesty after having fiddled with the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I agree that even if some of the specs are nerfed, Apple really wins this round with its excellent UI. Windows Mobile 6 still has a lot to catch up in terms of useability…

Good point about the MP3 player vs phone though, hehe…

Haha :P Most of the times that is true, though :P

wait till u use the iPod Touch .. then u’ll know wat a PDA is meant to be like

i’ve used Windows Mobile for a few months … even with HTC Touch’s new interface … its still awful. and u used to O2 for a few hours and u said cannot wat

sigh … i tried … and tried … going back to a normal handphone … at least i have my contacts and calendar and i can surf the net using my iPod Touch so that meets my need of having my calendar / schedule handy

hugs … aiyah … i’ve been having a spell of massic bad luck … didn’t tell u … my house was flooded monday night … bryan and i came home and there was water coming out of the house all the way till the lift landing on the 23rd floor … half the lift landing was flooded

    sigh …

no … the TouchFlo interface actually short-cuts the number of steps u need to get to ur most used applications which i think is a brilliant idea.

Windows Mobile just sucks big time

what i have problem with is the new ROM upgrade that tries to make things better but just makes things worse. its harder to select people i wanna send an SMS to … and the area that is available to enter text just tries to be too smart for its own good making interaction with the phone frustrating.

i almost threw the phone against the wall several times after the new ROM upgrade. i’m trying to check for a factory reset which i hope makes everything go back to the way things were previously

i’m sorry … this time round HTC just got it wrong.

Not enough memory to run programs … when i wanna use the camera … i need to close all other programs. it wasn’t like that previously … and how stupid is that!!!!

i’m gonna tahan on this phone a short while more .. until i find a price that i don’t mind paying for the Sony Ericsson K770i or the W910i

  11. JermynToh says:

i did … installed the ROM upgrade and can u believe its WORSE!!!!

and now it keeps telling me to close program coz not enough memory to run things .. and sometimes i’m trying to SMS

now it takes me much longer to SMS than previously. the Phonepad takes up 80% of the screen space and u have a tiny tiny amount of screen space left to see ur text message

all i can say is whoever designed the ROM upgrade is STUPID!!!!

    Robin’s right, you know.

The interface that he’s having trouble with (TouchFlo) has nothing to do with Microsoft, or Windows Mobile, for that matter – it’s HTC’s design, and is proprietary.

But then Apple fanatics all seem to lack the inability to distinguish – it’s all Apple, isn’t it?

(Oh, and he’s comparing a phone to an mp3 player, but we’ll ignore that.)

    LOL

  13. robingoh says:

Don’t try to convince him. It all boils down to this: APPLE GOOD, PC BAAAAAAD!

  14. robingoh says:

You’ve really been losing things lately. But that’s ok. Because you get new and niftier things to replace them! :P

Did you try installing Phonepad into the Touch? It may help in terms of SMSing…
