Considering a PC

A fren vagabondt blogged that the new Civilizations IV Game has some Singapore buildings in the gamebox skyline. So I went to take a look and I read the reviews for it at www.gamespot.com.

I remember before I saw the light and moved to the world of Macs and the OS X platform …. I used to spend hours and hours playing games like Civilizatons II & III as well as Sim City 2000 etc …. I loved the games and would willingly give up going out clubbing to spend sleepless weekends trying to building my cities, win wars, conquer the world ….

The game reviews have rated the game as AMAZING & EXCELLENT. Reading the game overview and watching the Game PLay Videos makes me SO tempted to go out and get a PC just to play this game!!!

*shock horrors*

HOW!!!! TORN NOW!!!! THE DRAW OF THE GAME IS SO STRONG ….. I’M THINKING OF GETTING A PC WITH WINDOWS ON IT!! ARGH!!!

sorry … being a bit dramatic … guess only Mac geeks will understand the dilema this presents
- if you’re wondering why Mac lovers keep harping on not going back to Windows …. see this entry which shows a chart on Operating Systems ranked by quality and usability

I’m not a tech geek, per se, but I work in tech PR, so I do try to keep abreast of what’s going on out there.

  2. JermynToh says:

i’m curious about why u’re so well versed in all this?

i probably don’t know u that well but it never struck me that u’d be a tech geek like so many gay boys out there

“… a number of people are reporting that Boot Camp–Apple’s new beta software that allows Intel-based Mac owners to install Windows XP–is causing some serious problems …”

You’ll note that the program they’re having trouble with isn’t Windows – it’s Boot Camp, which was developed by Apple.

I know you like Macs, but this is the sort of thing that makes the rest of us wary of people who recommend Macs.

I don’t know abt the graphic card part, but surely its the developer of Parallels Desktop (not Apple) that’s touting it as a way of running Windows on Intel Mac?

Why would you think that? That’s not what I said.

Check Apple’s Get A Mac – Run Windows page – and you’ll see that Apple doesn’t talk about Bootcamp at all.

There was a bit of a fuss a while ago about Apple switching from pushing Bootcamp (Beta) to talking about Parallels Desktop, in articles like this.

And there’s other stuff out there, too, like how Apple’s Touche ad specifically mentions Parallels, and so on.

I’m sure Parallels is pushing their own product, but I meant what I said – Apple is touting Parallels Desktop.

I’m totally ignorant abt computer games cos I don’t play them :)

  6. devinjay says:

Well, there you go. Get a MacBook Pro, and Civilisation 4. But first, clear your calendar.

  7. shaoann says:

    surprised?! hehehe

  8. shaoann says:

isn’t it ironic that an iconic architecture of Singapore’s citiscape is the MayBank Tower!?!

  9. rabid_sheep says:

I want to play too! My desktop is too ancient!!!

  10. urbank1d says:

Got Twin Tower? I dun think so. I see the Singapore MayBank Tower at least.

  11. JermynToh says:

you’re kidding … u play computer games … CivII some more!??!!!

  12. JermynToh says:

eh … got such a thing ah?

  13. JermynToh says:

yeah … upgrade to a higher spec mac!!!

    thinking about a MacBook Pro

  14. shaoann says:

Civ 2 is still da best lor!

  15. kairin says:

dunno why but this came to mind – closeted windows user…

  16. devinjay says:

Good point – I’m thinking of Parallels Desktop, which Apple is touting as the way to run Windows on Macs.

Bootcamp does dual-boot, but even then your problems aren’t over. I don’t think most Macs have the graphics cards Windows needs to run Civ IV, because I think Macs handle graphics differently. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

  17. devinjay says:

Have you considered that this might be a message from the universe?

  18. JermynToh says:

this happening on ur Mac is wat I called emulating Windows!
Boot Camp users reporting serious crashes

  19. joejunior says:

    But Bootcamp isn’t emulating Windows.
Bootcamp merely lets you dual-boot. :)

  20. JermynToh says:

cannot leh …. before i even bought it i thought i’d check out the system requiremenst

CPU Processor: PowerPC G5 or Intel chipset
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz or faster

that means you can only play Civ IV for mac on the new MacBooks and the iMacs with Dual core

my macs are still the iBook G4 and the Powerbook G4

    :-(

  21. devinjay says:

Well, he’s gone to look for it, so maybe all is not lost.

  22. JermynToh says:

i wud NEVER let my Mac emulate windows … cannot la … its so WRONG

  23. JermynToh says:

i thought so too … until i tried working off a windows laptop recently when i forgot to bring my iBook to work and i nearly slit my wrist

they say Mac Office works better than Office for Windows and I really agree

    :-)

  24. JermynToh says:

following my comment about going to get it now …. i only hope the Mac game versions are available in Malaysia. keeping fingers crossed

  25. JermynToh says:

    heh….. i also just realised.

i thought i remember seeing Civ for Mac and I just checked it out. …. on my way to get it NOW!!!!

  26. kykydiary says:

To me, it is not the OS that matters, it is the applications i use that do.

  27. e_rambler says:

Yah lor haha I also just commented :P

  28. e_rambler says:

Errr. Civ IV is available for the Mac leh…

  29. devinjay says:

I’m reasonably sure that running Civ IV on a Mac emulating Windows would be just as slow.

Bootcamp’s fine for most things, but games are so resource-intensive that they don’t work quite as well run that way.

  30. ellcrius says:

i went gaga over this game earlier this year… but alas my comp is too slow to play it in its full glory.

cant ur macbook do the bootcamp thingie?
