Gay Marriage of Bill & Bonni

I had the good fortune of having to go back to Singapore for work on Friday which was the day that 2 gay frens of mine were getting married. They’ve been together 10 yrs and exactly 10 yrs to the day that they had run away and made their vows in front of the white buddah in Shanghai, they renewed their vows with their dear friends as witnesses.

The day was hectic as is usual with my little time in SG. Guests were supposed to arrive at 6pm at another friend’s great big house with the ceremony starting at 7pm. I got in 5 mins before 7pm and just had time to change into the “resort chique” dress-code and rush to the reception area. Watching Bill and Bonni stride down the ailse holding hands, I couldn’t help but smile and consider if I’m wrong about my believe that there’s no such thing as love (long-term love that keeps a couple together longer than 5 yrs that is).

The ceremony was beautiful ….. all the more so as it wasn’t just a gay only gathering but an even mix of our really dear straight friends as well. Actually, it was our straight friends who organised the whole thing and they left out no detailed – from the lotuses floating all around the water features by the pool to the lotus candles all along the ailse to the pavillion where they exchanged their vows to the wild doves that were released.

One of the speeches given was that we need more love in a world that’s full of failed relationships, bitterness and misunderstanding. That and that we need more people who will take charge and “lead the way” for other gay people. 10 yrs is amazing for any couple and to watch Bill & Bonni tremble, shake and forget their lines as they exchanged their vows …. I can’t help but feel really moved by their love for each other.

My first gay wedding – I hope to attend more and I hope one day I just might start believing in long term love – not necessarily change my mind about getting married but believing in a love that can last forever.

Well, I’m happy to hear that they’re very committed to each other and the acceptance level that they have from their straight friends. The love shared between two parties is always beautiful, regardless of gender.

Hope to see many more of such weddings to come.
