Windows OS IS STUPID!!!!

anyone can help?? have spent about 2 hours trying to figure this out but to no avail

my dad got a new Dell computer and is trying to connect to my home network

- when we connect directly using a LAN cable he gets an internet connection and can surf no problem
- when he uses the wireless connection, he gets connected to the wireless network but CANNOT surf (no internet connection detected)
- all the other Macs connected wirelessly or directly to my router work fine

any clues anyone?

I’m so glad connecting via a Mac is brainless!! It took me about 15 mins to figure out on the DEll how to configure the wireless connection to log in to my home network!!

Its an Inspiron because just by looking at it, any shit one can conceive of will definitely look better.

    Such a motivation to inspire. Mmmm… :P

  2. JermynToh says:

think will try that as well .. if it works …. then i gotta go change settings for all the other computers just to accomodate a stupid dell

    thanks for the advice

  3. JermynToh says:

he just paid $2.2K for this brick

and its actually quite ugly to boot!!! wah liao eh .. they really weren’t thinking of asthetics when they put the Dell Inspiron together. What a great name too!!!

  4. vagabondt says:

Perhaps you can convince Dad to chuck that Dell out… And get him to go back to Canada with a nice and sweet Mac Mini or something! *conniving*

  5. vagabondt says:

Yeah.. Its called Windows for a reason, because the only thing you can do with it, is look through a window, and not get in.

  6. cowie says:

my first guess is that the Dell is not authenticating with WPA properly. turn that off and see what happens. WEP plays better with windows in my experience but it’s less secure.

have spoken to my IT guy at work and he suggested a few things which I’ll go home to try (mostly changin some router settings and allowing ALL connections just nin case I set it to block some …. plus maybe one setting in advance tab of the wireless network thing)

Sys Admin guy and IT Director both say connecting wirelessly on Windows is either easy … or FUCKING difficult cause of some conflict or another

  8. JermynToh says:

its a lynksis wireless router .. box says it works for both Mac and PC … sigh … its WPA

  9. JermynToh says:

please hor … u being blonde is fact lor .. wat u talking about

  10. JermynToh says:

    I KNOW!!!

and Dad’s been using my PowerBook since he got back and can’t figure out why Apple connects so effortlessly but windows has SO many problems….. DUH!!!! Its Windows!!!

  11. vagabondt says:

Tsk tsk… Windows… and Dell for that matter! LOL…

    I totally understand. :)

  12. robingoh says:

Wah, I must say there are a lot of smart and tech-savvy people on LJ. All that just went way over my head! * looks blond*

  13. joejunior says:

    sounds alright…

i guess u are better off using the wizard to set up another connection..

is that ip allowed internet access? check ur router settings

  14. sacred_faith says:

must be all the porn u have installed than :P

  15. JermynToh says:

    did that … WPA

even used the network wizard but still only connecting to the wireless network but not the internet

I GIVE UP … WINDOWS / DELL IS DUMB!!!

  16. delonchew says:

You might want to check your wireless settings. If in doubt, can ask Victor later.

P.S. I just realised that we answered at the same time. :D

  17. cowie says:

are you trying to connect to an airport base station? did u set up WEP or WPA?

  18. JermynToh says:

linksys wireless router – its supposed to be mac and PC compatible .. plus i’ve had frens connect before using their PC no problem so i can rule out the router

  19. delonchew says:

There will be a computer icon in the taskbar indicating that there’s a wireless connection available.

  20. JermynToh says:

there’s an icon at the bottom right that says its connected and indicates the strength of the connection

  21. oo_zy says:

Have you checked the wireless connection settings?
Check for the correct channel, WPA/WEP keys, etc…

Or you can use the Wireless Network Setup Wizard and create a connection to your router manually…

  22. sacred_faith says:

erm… i thought wireless routers for macs and pcs are different?

  23. joejunior says:

    - when he uses the wireless connection, he gets connected to the wireless network but CANNOT surf (no internet connection detected)

How do u know you are connected wirelessly?
Does XP pop up a notification or something?
