Contact Lenses

by JermynToh on 29 August, 2004

This is a post for all those who wear contact lenses. Thought I’d share this with you all … seeing my Doc says this is getting really common these days.
—————————-
People have been asking for the longest time about my eye-bags, dark rings and puffy eyes but I never thought anything of it.

Past few months, my eyes get all red and swollen whenever I put on my lenses for a few hours. If I stay off contact lenses for a few days, I can actually go a whole day wearing them for maybe a week or two before my eyes start acting up again. Did everything from change my monthly wear lenses every 2 or 3 weeks to cleaning them thoroughly and using eye-drops.

Last week or so, it got to a point where I couldn’t keep my lenses in for more than 4 or 5 hours. Got worried so went to the Singapore National Eye Centre on Friday and the doctor said I got allergic conjunctivitis. He says it a very common problem.

There a lumps on the underside of my eye-lids. I know shao ann had this recently and the problem is …. once it starts … its downhill from there!!!

I even have extra blood vessels that developed in my eyeball to carry oxygen to my cornea since I’ve been wearing contacts so long!

Option 1:
- keep off contact lenses for 4 to 6 weeks till the lumps go away
- I can possibly go back to wearing lenses for a while until the lumps come back
- but likely it’ll get to a point where I can’t even put a contact lense in my eye for more than 30 mins
(happened to my mom and I thought it would never happen to me!!)

Option 2:
- stop wearing contact lenses completely

Problem with Option 2 is that I get terrible head-aches wearing glasses and have been popping panadol daily for the past week. Feeling quite miserable and I want to sleep all the time as that’s the only time I don’t have to use my eyes and suffer the headaches.

Option 3:
- take a series of tests to see if my eyes can undergo Lasik surgery

Gonna take a series of tests to see if my eye-ball & retina is strong enough for this surgery and my cornea thick enough. Had a retina detachment 7 yrs ago which I had surgery for. I’m really hoping my eyes can take lasik surgery. If not I can’t imagine life in glasses with the constant headaches.

Moral of the story …. DON’T TAKE YOUR EYES FOR GRANTED!!! TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!
1. wear glasses whenever you can so your eyes can “recover” from the assault of contact lenses
2. lubicate your eyes with eye-drops
3. don’t sleep with your lenses (not even naps!!!)
